I'm really struggling to get on board with the argument that LiPs are somehow bringing this on themselves by stubbornly refusing the appoint someone qualified or competent.

An example used in these comments is of re-wiring your own house rather than using an electrician. I've seen another likening it to pulling your own teeth out and not consulting a dentist.

However all such examples work on the assumption that all these litigants in person can afford (or are afforded in another way) legal representation.

I'm sure that most would rather appoint an electrician to fix their electrics, a dentist to remove problem teeth or a lawyer to solve their legal problems, but if you cannot afford a professional (and the state has removed any other way of obtaining the service) what are you supposed to do? Especially so if you are the Defendant ...
