I am a qualified solicitor of 20+ years and have attended (unpaid) as a McKenzie friend at various hearings. Particularly n family matters, the unappealing bulk of me seems to act as a useful buffer and help keep things less shrill. Judges and parties seem to appreciate it. The real advantage is in being able to bring a neutral reasonableness to discussions. I respectfully agree with the positive comments about the patience and understanding of the professional judiciary. Some DDJs however are suprisingly rude to LiPs, talk to advisors in court when the LiP is not present and produce orders with confusing typos.
