Shouldn't we look further back? Two historic issues which allowed this to get this far are:
1 The Society not fighting back when mortgage lenders started using the trust/fiduciary argument to create artificial claims against solicitors, and
2 Abolition of the Land/Charge Certificate - the absence of which put everyone on a higher level of alert.

Because of No 2, I think this is a classic case where the state should compensate the victims - this is a crime, not a civil matter, and the state has made the commission of that crime easier.
