I'm torn on this. While I don't think that one needs a degree, the very old boys used to get their training at the old College in Guildford before it became the College of Law. It was a six month course I think and it gave them the essentials. Whilst it isn't necessary to know what Walter Bagehot said, the law is very complicated and, whilst HMG and SRA might wish it otherwise, that remains a fact. I speak as a bear of little brain myself - but I passed the exams, and what I learned have stood me time and again in good stead. Practical knowledge isn't everything. Ones teacher may be ben or useless, and that won't do.
