The old Guide to Professional Conduct provided that a solicitor should advise the client to instruct an independent solicitor (or refuse to act) if the client wanted to make a gift to them "of a significant amount, either in itself or having regard to the size of the client's estate and the reasonable expectations of prospective beneficiaries".
That seems a sensible approach, but does it no longer apply?
The current outcome focussed rules do not seem to allow for such small "confilcts" to be ignored without independent advice etc.
