On any grounds of h u m a n i t y, justice or logic, Treacy was right. but, of course, politicians and judges are not humans (and will be struck down by superiors if they act as such), they're bureaucrats, for whom children (despite their interests being ruled paramount) are just pawns on the political chessboard the politicians so love to triumph on, regardless of whether their decisions unnecessarily have some harmful effects.
How disgusting an individual do you have to be to think that some vague 'promotion' (which a majority of the population may not see as essential) of marriage, for a purpose convenient to the government, is more important than the welfare of children?
I hope the mother/children win, hopefully in the Supreme Court, or else in Europe.
