Sir Richard Richard has made every point I would wish to - there are some things you learn from Day 1 of criminal defence work - never give your client your phone in custody, never take anything from your client in custody, never hand sensitive evidence to your client etc...

If you have ethical standards based on firm rules then there is no risk of ever being a rabbit caught in headlights, because the answer to the question, "what do I do here?" in most cases is predetermined.
