Just because the taxpayer may pick up the bill does not take away from the fact that this was a massive f*ck up on the part of the CPS that is worthy of sanction. If a private firm did this then I expect everyone's comments would centre around the singular point of "ha there you go, well-deserved, hit them in their profits that'll teach them!!".

Double-standards in sanctions doesn't help anyone. The CPS deserves whatever bad press and criticism they get for a screw-up of this nature. Since the abuse victims may well soon be taxpayers themselves, I'm fairly sure that they won't feel so forgiving irrespective of what this does to their tax bill.
