Mr Maloney, the short answer to your question and that of Mr G is that it is naturally possible to leave the EU, however the disadvantages of doing so will make it an unattractive option for many countries. This is why I believe that in my lifetime Britain will rejoin the EU.

What you see as bad behaviour on the part of the EU and its member states since June 2016, I regard as the normal rough and tumble of commercial negotiations. They have no interest in giving Britain a free pass, just as your local golf club wouldn't want to give a member who resigns a special status whereby he retains the advantages of membership without the obligations which others have to abide by.
