Christopher Gough - yes, this is all well and good, but at that point you actually have some information regarding the case and can given a relatively reliable estimate - we are talking about a generic price on a website. A good example was given below regarding Employment Tribunal cases. Probate is another area where the costs can vary wildly, depending on complexity, size of estate, disputes between beneficiaries - the list goes on. So to cover that, an estimate of ooh, say £1500 to £50000, if the firm is being honest about the extremes of charging. Which helps precisely no-one. Not the client (or potential client), not the firm, as if the client is that price driven they will go to the firm that has a headline figure of Probate: £1500 - which takes no account of anything other than a bog standard low value estate. And then they get screwed for costs, as this estimate is unrealistic for their actual circumstances and once again the profession gets slated in the press. The ideas coming out of the SRA are becoming increasingly ludicrous and sadly Mr Passmore is behind many of them. Is he a consumer champion? Maybe, but probably not if you actually look at the outcomes. His skills in running an actual business rather than NFP or Quango? Absolutely zero. Let's hope that the LSB see sense on this one.
