It's high time that the LCJ, regulators, the MOJ, Law Society and Bar Council got their heads together and sorted this out. The best silks are refusing to become judges, even for a limited time. Some may be Recorders and already give up their time to do so which is commendable but it's not enough. The very best at the top of the tree have a public duty to fulfill after having become millionaires from entry to the profession. London has a reputation to maintain. There needs to be a first-rate judiciary setting the standard. Practising certificates should be made conditional on the holder being requested to serve as a judge after their 55th or 60th birthday. If the cream of the bar are unwilling to support the system that feeds them then they should be denied access to it. Whatever happened to public duty ?
