Nothing new here.
Throughout the last 30 odd years I have been variously offered low salaries with un-earnable bonuses or commissions; opportunities for advancement that aren't; found that the work waiting for me didn't exist at all and so on. It is why I stopped pursuing private practice. I now have a CV with a number of blue-chip names on it.

I am not one to say never and do test the PP world from time to time. Much as I hope to be wrong, I am repeatedly disappointed. The last instance was a couple of years ago. That firm started by switching my interview to its new offices, instead of where I would be working, to try and impress me. It then said it wanted a senior lawyer to represent the business, but could not talk about what they wanted without me taking an aptitude test and treating me like a 3 year qualified (or less).

The best line managers I have ever had were both lawyers who had managerial experience outside law. The worst (in or out of PP) had only ever been solicitors.
