I wonder if the commentators have actually read the decision of the judge in this case. At no point does Mann suggest that reporting criminal investigations is in danger.

The reason why we have reporting restrictions is twofold. To protect the administration of justice and to prevent trial by media. The scandalous sensationalism of the reporting on the raid on this claimant's home threatens both and to suggest that it is justified in the public interest is risible.

The absurd 'drama' of helicopters circulating over a private house as if it was the site of a live terrorist outrage added nothing to the story, which it was pertfecly legal to report. What the preposterous behaviour did was suggest that Sir Cliff had something to hide and that by implication he was guilty.

It was exactly the same idiotic behaviour inflicted on Christopher Jeffries, falsely accused of murder but 'fair game' because he was a "bit weird".
