Considering the financial sums involved, to not make reasonable checks in such a field (when as a child my parents had to provide all kinds of ID verification when my first £5 went into a building society account) is not unreasonable. However, like with insurers, banks and so many other finance based companies, one may conduct reasonable checks but still be duped – in such cases, no, one should not be liable. If no checks were made, then surely there is a failure?
