I was just thinking as I read it one reason she says she did well was having the mother - doctor and aunt lawyer. Same in this family. My mother supported my father even through her teacher earnings. Her mother was widowed with a baby so solely supported my mother always. Her mother before her was widowed for a second time in 1917. Even in the 1890s my grandfather's sister went off to study nursing and qualified and practised in London all her life (she was in charge of a ward but could not become a doctor as in the 1890s women were not allowed to do that). So not surprisingly I and my daughters are lawyers. However in families where women earn pin money or at least much less than men then it is much harder for women to progress.
