Attending a Russell Group university has nothing to do with class and everything to do with academic achievement, aptitude and potential.
Given the vastly differing standards between universities in the top 50 and the bottom 50, it is unsurprising that in the absence of much other information, law firms tend to choose their trainee candidates on this basis.
Not many law firms have the time and resources to produce their own aptitude test and prefer to rely on academic institutions to do that for them.
Please don't confuse opportunity with outcome. Lawyers who attend Russell Group universities do not necessarily enter them as middle-class students, but with hard work and dedication they may well end up with careers that settle them there.
