"the party wants a single parent to be able to fight back against a ‘lousy landlord’"

Yes that this should feeding money to lawyers. The system would not exist without them.

For centuries they have churned out unfriendly leases which give landlords the power to exploit tenants.

My own lease is an example. Less that ten years old it lacks table of contents, index and headings for sections and clauses. It requires anyone wanting a small bit of information to read the whole thing and anyone could be forgiven that it has been drafted with a view to making tenants unaware of their rights. The solicitors who drafted this proudly put their name on the front cover despite their client having to ring me up to find a reference in the document that he signed!

The government needs to invest in artificial intelligence to transmogrify leases from unstructured text impeding understanding to ordered information protecting rights.

Not in the profession that has failed to prevent obscenely escalating ground-rents
