I love McKenzie Friends. I recently defended a client company at Barnstaple County Court where the claimant was 'represented' by a retired so called McKenzie Friend who made the biggest dogs dinner of the entire affair, including poorly drafting the claim and filing and serving abysmal pleadings. I recited the Legal Services Act 2007 and the conduct of litigation being a reserved activity in the Defence but the District Judge simply ignored it. He didn't even ask me if I objected to a McKenzie Friend conducting the proceedings and calling and cross examining the 5 witnesses. The claim was for £9,995 (he thought he was being clever keeping it under the Fast Track limit so we couldn't get costs) but he had his backside kicked firstly by me and then he got another roasting outside from his clients (or is it customers or consumers these days).
