Great in theory, never going to work in practice when the case inevitably takes twists and turns that the parties didn't/couldn't reasonably foresee.

Then there's the issue of the trial judge going off on a tangent, asking for stuff no one thought was going to be needed and criticising the unfortunate party that didn't have their crystal ball turned to the correct setting when considering what disclosure was likely to be required.
