Where have we got to as a 'free society' where this matter can have any repercussions in law?

I was born in 1941 and I never heard of any relatives killed in WWII. But while still primary school age, I learnt of what the poppy signified and why it was chosen as the symbol of remembrance and gratitude for the sacrifice of those who fought to defend 'their country', ie their/our fellow citizens, against the forces of a foreign country. I also learnt of the 'homes for heroes', as our government called them, before failing to provide them, as more recent governments have given up on any feeling of moral duty to ensure that all citizens have a home and all the original heroes' great-great--grand-children have enough to eat - yet they still parade in the pomp and circumstance of Remembrance Sunday, apparently forgetting who was responsible for sending, post WWII, hundreds more to their deaths in far-off conflicts, which in no way threatened the lives of those here, eg, enthusiastically killing/torturing the Africans (who may have fought for us in WWII) protesting about the continued armed colonisation of their homelands.
With the poppy coming to represent all these indiscriminately, I long ago gave up wearing it. I do not have sympathy for those who now readily "take the Queen's shilling" (ie, are mercenaries) to indulge in these conflicts where there is a strong risk (Is there not enough in the media for them to recognise it?) of killing/maiming innocent civilians including children. The triumphalism of the top brass is sickening.
