Excellent point, 9.145.

I had the great good fortune to work for many years for a profitable, busy firm where, on day one, the managing partner told me that if I was seen at my desk beyond 6pm, they would want to know what was wrong. The culture there was that so long as you were able to keep on top of your work, nobody batted an eyelid if people left at 5pm. The quid pro quo was that there were occasions when the demands of the caseload meant taking work home at weekends or staying late, but the point is the firm was geared to allow individuals to make these decisions for themselves, being faced with a caseload that was entirely manageable.

Compare and contrast this with the horror stories emanating from at least one of the firms in the recent SRA strike off appeals.
