I'm the first person in my family not to leave school at 15/16. I'm from the north of England. I'm a Partner in a National firm (whether that is to be considered being successful, I'll leave to others to decide).
I have a more comfortable life than my parents ever did. They both worked full time, and made a lot of sacrifices to give me the chance to continue my education. They expected me to work bloody hard as my part of the bargain and I have always done so.

I expect my children to work hard. Hopefully they will be bright enough not to go into law as a career. To me, if I do not pass on the benefits given to me by my parents to my own children, I am letting everyone down.

There are obviously instances of unearned privilege, but making sacrifices and working hard with a successful outcome is not privilege. To tar everyone with the same brush is lazy, divisive and a disincentive.
