He was fined by the SDT, not the SRA. I assume that the context of Mark Lewis' actions were explained to the Tribunal by his Counsel? In which case, why did they find the charges proven? The Tribunal consists of lay members as well as solicitors so one would have thought that was a sufficient cross section of opinion from which to produce a sensible decision. From the reports it looks like he represented himself and if that was the case then it might have been advisable for him to be represented by Counsel or another solicitor, given the highly-charged emotional nature of the case. That said, this case shows that solicitors are expected to be paragons of virtue and restraint when many people behave abominably without any consequences.
