I'm just loving this comment thread. For years residential conveyancing solicitors had been viewed as legally qualified algae, not like proper commercial or litigation practitioners. So everything became "by numbers", and then came the rise of firms with "systems" and legion unqualified "case handlers".
Really, as pipeline conversion and meeting the wholly unrealistic expectations of clients fed by the conveyancing factories and agents is it any wonder that it has all gone downhill? Before I quit, after two decades in residential conveyancing . Specific PEs were seen as almost mischievous and deliberate misinformation of a chain's readiness or otherwise was common. If the market wants a £50 indemnity rather than advice then let it have one and question it's value at leisure when all goes south
