Control of immigration should be taken much more seriously. You cannot seriously expect to operate a generous welfare system (such as we do) and operate open borders. There is now massive pressure on public services and housing, and low wage growth caused in large part by mass immigration begun during the Blair administration in 1997. European borders are very leaky and once in Europe, there is a great incentive to get to the UK because of our generous and sensitive policy on welfare and our (generous) policy of assessing migrants and refugees for asylum status. We should aim to control overall population (including immigration) within sustainable limits, invest significantly more in training for key skills (eg indigenous / home-grown doctors and nurses) and permit wages and living standards to rise within a tight but well-managed labour-market.
