"but it seems unjust to allege that one cannot be a politician and honest."

I did not make that allegation, and for the avoidance of doubt I am absolutely certain that Mr Mercer is an honest man who is kind to animals and who loves his mother.

My post was not a comment on Mr Mercer, but was instead predicated on two decades of widely reported abuse of parliamentary privilege and parliamentary expenses. It comes from a wizened and cynical pen, wielded by one who has seen cabinet ministers and other parliamentarians convicted of perjury, the most recent case of which being only three weeks ago. It comes from a person who feels a great deal of rage when hearing current ministers talking about the best interests of the country being served by Brexit, when some of those self same ministers spent the referendum campaign arguing precisely the opposite.
