I've been a lawyer in the US for 15 years. I'm also qualified as a barrister & solicitor in Canada and very recently became qualified as a solicitor in England & Wales. I admire the English legal system; however, I do not understand why the legal profession is split into three branches. Among other things, it needlessly leads to these types of turf battles. In my humble opinion, there should be one legal profession with high standards for entry. Once qualified, lawyers would be free to specialise as they wish. The hierarchy within the legal profession should be based on an individual's professional skills, not regulated distinctions between branches of the profession that lawyers entered when they were 22 years old. Just my two pence.
