I am so out of touch with the modern world that when I was at university we studied law as an academic discipline, not a vocational course. We learned to understand the law, how to think for ourselves, carry out detailed research and argue points from every perspective. The professional exams that followed added further knowledge, and also moved one into a more vocational understanding of the learning and principles that had been instilled during the law degree.
It was not until training (articles back then) that one got shown how to apply those skill to dealing with clients and their real world problems.
It seemed to work well.
