This is a tangent to the article as obviously the SRA is not the focus here, but I've just noticed this section in the MOJ's review paper. In discussing the need for training dealing with advocacy in an inquisitorial setting, the MOJ contacted the SRA and BSB:

"The regulators take the view that reporting poor practice is key to monitoring lawyers’ performance and conduct, but it seems that coroners rarely flag concerns about misconduct for fear that it might lead to disproportionate sanctions. The SRA and BSB assure us that if coroners raise their concerns with them it will not necessarily result in targeted disciplinary action – training is just as likely to be the result"

So even the SRA are aware they have a reputation, amongst members of the judiciary, for disproportionate sanctions.

I note that the SRA and BSB said reporting concerns will not *necessarily* result in disciplinary action.

I could believe that of one of those regulators...
