This whole thing is a nonsense. You should be able to state plainly, preferably in writing, that you no longer wish to live, without having to explain why. There needs to be a public official to whom you deliver this statement. S/he will arrange for someone, maybe a psych-iatrist/olgist, to ensure that you understand what it means - no faffing about with " Have you thought of a, b, c ... y, z possibilities", designed to confuse or frighten you. Do you have family, have you made a will? If you know what you're about, you can go ahead. You can nominate someone to help, and that's that.
I'm 77 and until 12 years ago, when I got cancer, I wouldn't have given a thought to it. The cancer causes me no pain and the consultant doesn't seem to have any idea of how long I will go on, except that when I asked the consultant that diagnosed me, he could only say that, whatever my normal lifespan would be, the cancer would get me first.
I want to survive for the convenience of my wife, children and 6 grandchildren, 4 to 16. My grandad died when I was 8, so I have memories of him, which I find satisfying..
For 2 weeks, I have been uncomfortably wiped by an overwhelming 'chest' infection, which my GP seems to have no answer to - antibiotics don't work. If it turned out to be incurable and I had only my two 50ish daughters, who are strong and sensible (and would look after me), I would see what their opinion was. If I had no no family, and no cure was found in six months, meaning there was no further pleasure in life, I would dispose of myself, possibly with the help of my double-cousin, who is as matter of fact as I am, leaving my property to her/her 4 children.
