The reasoning employed here, by Mr Bennett, would enable an historian to argue that the sentences imposed by Judge Jeffreys, at the Bloody Assizes, were justifiable after all because they were directed just against supporters of the Monmouth Rebellion and not against everyone who appeared before the criminal courts of England at that time! It may not surprise you to hear that I am unconvinced by that reasoning.
