I am a solicitor with considerable experience of the JAC from both sides of the interview table. Its whole ethos is pro-barrister and the way it operates favours the Bar. For example, its questions are basically in a code that you need training (or colleagues aka the Bar as solicitors can't admit applications in case of impact on their employment) to understand. The system isn't respected by the legal profession. I have seen too many excellent candidates overlooked, even for roles they are undertaking, in favour of inexperienced people who tick the boxes. I may have benefitted from the JAC approach, compared to the old system (in which I would've stood no chance) but I can't defend an equally poor system on that basis.
