I'm disappointed by the Gazette's suggestion that this is "hardball" - a headline that echoes the paranoid, swivel-eyed accusations one sees in the more extreme sections of the press that a sinister cabal of polite, middle-aged Eurocrats and George Soros (fill in the subtext yourself...) are out to do us all in.

Put very simply, if the UK becomes a non-member-state, why would we expect to benefit from cross-border recognition of our professional qualifications and right to practice, absent a regulated establishment and indemnity insurance? And why would we expect our Irish opposite numbers to bear the costs of a decision taken by UK voters?
