Some of the anonymous comments, if made by solicitors, are quite surprising. Outcome 1.13 of the SRA Code of Conduct requires that "...clients receive the best possible information, both at the time of engagement and when appropriate as their matter progresses, about the likely overall cost of their matter..." In my experience, firms want transparency regarding the costs position with their client (i) so they actually get paid (ii) don't end up with bad feeling and a dispute which can damage the firm's reputation e.g. via a nasty Google review. A disparity between what a client expects to pay and the actual bill a firm submits is a recipe for disaster.
