Nice to see a busy government minister taking the time to gain a legal qualification while in office. Alas the minister concerned is not our own justice secretary but Mohammed Wakil, Nigeria’s minister of state for power (pictured right).

Unkind commentators have made much of the fact that Chris Grayling is the first lord chancellor in centuries not to have studied snails in ginger beer bottles or whatever. However, Grayling could defuse some of the negative commentary by following Wakil’s example, by studying for an LLM from Huddersfield University – and gaining a distinction.

And looking at the energy secretary’s catchy choice for a thesis title, ‘The Legal Framework for the Promotion and Protection of Investment in Nigeria’, we wonder if Grayling might not plump for something usable in his day job. Obiter would love to hear your suggestions.
