'Master of the Rolls' and 'hippie trail' are not expressions that Obiter would normally expect to find in the same sentence. However, at last week's Law Society Council dinner, the MR, Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers, entertained guests with a tale of his adventures some years ago in the Philippines. As he was exploring potentially dangerous areas with only one guide, Lord Phillips took the sensible precaution of looking as scruffy as possible - 'like something off the hippie trail'. One of the highlights, he intimated, was being offered dog-meat stew. For the record, he demurred.
