There must have been dancing in the streets of New York last month when mayor Michael Bloomberg proclaimed 12 August, 2004 'Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP day' to recognise the California-headquartered law firm's 20 years in the Big Apple. Whether there was a ticker-tape parade and an open top bus trip down 5th Avenue for Orrick's lawyers is as yet unknown. However, it wouldn't be New York without the statutory Frank Sinatra reference - speaking to the assembled guests at a party to mark the anniversary, Orrick chairman Ralph Baxter said: 'By making it in New York, we have proven that Orrick can make it anywhere.' Obiter thinks that such 'days' would be a grand idea in London. How about a Clifford Chance day with managing partner Peter Cornell paraphrasing 'Run, rabbit, run' by Chas 'n' Dave over a celebratory slap-up meal of pie and mash with jellied eels?
