Obiter hears tell of yet more fast women in the legal profession.
This time Yvonne Mcgarry, 48, who runs her own firm in Hampshire, has got in touch to inform us all that she completed this year's London marathon in 3hrs 15mins 20secs - so overtaking Sophie Dawson-Kohary, 29-year-old solicitor at Oxfordshire firm Hedges Solicitors, who took 3hrs 18mins 8secs to cross the finish line [See Obiter, 5 June].
Not only is she faster than Dawson-Kohary, Mcgarry (pictured below) is quick to point out that she is also 'nearly 20 years older than that nipper Sophie'. Mcgarry, who ran her first marathon at the age of 40, says she was the 11th veteran home in her age category and would have just made it into the top 150 runners. Keen Obiter readers will recall Dawson-Kohary had a starting place with the 190 or so elite women runners.
Mcgarry claims that running has kept her sane and also that the solitude allows for the odd 'eureka' moment on particularly trying cases. 'I do exclusively matrimonial law and if I didn't run I would have gone completely mad by now,' she says. Is there an even faster female lawyer out there or a marathon runner who can call Mcgarry a nipper? Has the race to claim the fastest lady lawyer title finally been won?
