Over the years, law firms have become increasingly opportunistic in their sports sponsorship. The likes of cricket, rugby and football have all witnessed brazen attempts by lawyers to bask in their reflected glory - and to pick up the best seats in the house for themselves, sorry, for clients. But this has reached an altogether higher level with news that Leamington Spa-based Amphlett Chatterton is sponsoring the 10th Women's World Bowls Championships, which are being held at the local Victoria Park. Pictured alongside the England team, who will surely win most fashionable team at the tournament, are Stewart Hunter, a partner at Amphlett Chatterton, and members of staff standing proudly in front of the firm's hospitality marquee.

No doubt they will be keeping a beady eye out for any ambush marketing by envious local rivals. The championships, meanwhile, have been christened 'the People's Games', surprisingly not because of any Marxist-Leninists on the organising committee, but rather because the financial support for the event was derived solely from people involved in the game. As Citizen Smith once said, though probably not in the context of bowls, power to the people.
