Obiter admires stiff-upper-lip stoicism, particularly when exhibited by members of the profession. Serena Brotherton, for instance, shrugged off the fractured pelvis she suffered when her horse fell and rolled on her. ‘It was the first time I’d broken anything in 16 years of point-to-pointing,’ the solicitor from northern firm Langleys said. ‘And anyway, I was back in the saddle after just 10 weeks.’

Horses are clearly a passion. Brotherton, an amateur jockey, has not only won prestigious races – including the Queen Mother’s Cup at York and the Ladies’ Derby Handicap at Newbury – she is also a member of Langleys’ newly created Equine Law Group.

Brotherton added: ‘Being part of the group gives me the opportunity to bring my love of riding and first-hand experience of horses to advise clients in this sector.’

Obiter assumes she can advise on the best orthopaedic surgeon available in the area too…
