With the traditional image of a solicitor being a little – dare we suggest – staid, it is heartening to know that a touch of glamour will be heading our way in a few years. Jessica Linley, a 21-year-old law student at Nottingham University and the current Miss Nottingham, has been crowned Miss England 2010/11. Linley, who will take time out from her studies to compete at the Miss World contest in China next month, is treasurer of the university’s law society. She plans to qualify as a solicitor, and says her current firm of choice would be City powerhouse Herbert Smith, having been impressed at a recent visit there – but she has not yet completely ruled out family or criminal law work. For any readers concerned at the potentially sexist nature of an event that seeks to judge women primarily on appearance, Linley points out to Obiter that ‘the ethos of Miss World is "beauty with a purpose"’, and contestants are judged ‘on many different attributes, not solely on the way they look’. Indeed, it appears that the traditional ‘bathing suit’ round has been jettisoned in favour of a fitness/dance routine. Performed in Lycra.
