Obiter takes his swimming cap off to Hamlins intellectual property partner Ian Down, who is set to swim the English Channel for charity this week. Apparently, the first successful swim crossing was by Captain Webb in 1875, and the average time to swim the 19 or so nautical miles is about 13 hours. Mind you, the trip is no longer quite what you could call a novelty – there are 1,099 swimmers who can already say they have been there, swum that. At least Down will be able to tuck into some good French cuisine when he completes his bid to become Channel swimmer number 1,100. But it will be no surprise if he chooses to avoid the fruits de mer.
