Prison law associate Mike Pemberton (pictured), of Manchester firm Stephensons, went above and beyond the call of duty to try to empathise with his clients last week. He got himself banged up for half a day in a Victorian cell at the Manchester Police Museum. The heinous crimes for which he served his time were said by colleagues in his firm’s criminal department to include: using a posh telephone voice; having a Range Rover obsession; talking about Star Trek in the workplace; and a crime against fashion itself, wearing ties that clash with his shirt. His incarceration, with only a chamber pot and hairy blanket for company, raised £1,000 for local cancer charity The Christie. Obiter trusts Pemberton has by now managed to use his skills to get himself released on some kind of technicality, and that his sartorial judgment has improved.
