As Obiter never tires of reporting, international legal conferences throw up a myriad of embarrassing situations for normally staid lawyers. Predictably, things Maori heavily dominated the opening ceremony of the Auckland conference. For the uninitiated, the traditional Maori welcome involves an Eskimo-like rubbing of the forehead and nose. To be fair, however uncomfortable the IBA luminaries must have been as they engaged in this act with the local legal fraternity, they all managed it with varying degrees of dignity.
