Obiter was intrigued to learn that ‘distinguished achiever’ Lord Bach, or, as he is not-so-fondly considered in some circles, hammer of the legal aid system, is being given an honorary degree, to be conferred upon him today by the University of Leicester. Former legal aid minister Bach, who makes much of being a Leicester City fan, will be given the Doctor of Laws gong. For those who see Bach’s contribution to the law in a rather less favourable light, the accolade could raise a few eyebrows. But Bach is in esteemed company – broadcaster Terry Wogan (for reasons not entirely clear to bewildered old Obiter) will be awarded the same distinction, we’re told. There ought to be a law against it.
