As the national LGBTQ+ youth homelessness charity, akt offers a lifeline to young people across the UK.
Named after Albert Kennedy, a 16-year old who lost his life to homophobic abuse, akt began as a refuge for queer young people in Manchester, 35 years ago. Today, we are the only charity that supports homeless LGBTQ+ youth with centres in London, Bristol, Manchester and Newcastle. From these regional hubs, we provide a range of services that help vulnerable young people to a find home, security and the kind of community that makes it possible to thrive.
We believe that no young person should be forced to choose between a safe home and being who they are.
This involves working nationally with LGBTQ+ young people, aged 16-25, who are homeless, at risk of homelessness, or living in hostile environments. Our goal is to empower young people to embrace their identity and build a future free from the fear of homelessness.
Our legacy giving programme focuses on Chosen Family. For many LGBTQ+ people, who have faced rejection, discrimination, or homelessness, the idea of chosen family is not just symbolic, its lifesaving. It’s the network of love, solidarity and care we build when our birth families can’t or won’t stand beside us.
By leaving gifts in wills, our supporters are honouring that chosen family, extending their legacy to others who have walked a similar path, and helping to create a future where every LGBTQ+ young person not only has a roof over their head, but has a true sense of belonging.
