National law firm Weightmans LLP is significantly expanding its Glasgow office in the coming months, welcoming three partners to join the existing two.

Further hires over the coming months will build a team of 10 fee-earners plus support staff, bringing with them experience from a cross-section of areas such as insurance, real estate and employment.

Managing partner John Schorah said: ‘We are growing our business in Scotland organically, bringing together a team of experts from within the region in a focused way, and not as a consequence of any business acquisition.

‘We are extremely proud of the fact that this expansion has been in response to our clients requesting more of our presence north of the border.’

This month Weightmans has welcomed three new partners in the first intake – Douglas Gourlay, Pamela Stevenson and Seonaid Busby.

Douglas Gourlay joins from Anderson Strathern in Edinburgh, and brings over 15 years’ experience in commercial real estate and corporate finance.

His practice will be focusing on real estate finance matters in Scotland, but with a view to developing a dedicated real estate finance team to cover the wider UK market.

Pamela Stevenson and Seonaid Busby have joined the insurance side of the business from BTO solicitors, collectively bringing an impressive 39 years of experience in personal injury – both pursuer and defender – consumer protection and regulatory work.

Their roles will see them developing the firm’s offering in the insurance market and advising on Scottish claims work arising internally from teams across the insurance business line including commercial insurance, dedicated disease, large loss, motor and transport, regulatory, and from the firm’s public sector business line.

John Schorah continued: ‘Our culture at Weightmans is about putting the needs of our clients first. It is in our DNA to listen to our clients and respond by developing and expanding our business in line with what they want. We look forward to nurturing existing relationships and creating opportunities with our new team of experts in Scotland across a variety of sectors.’

Stuart McFarlane, partner and regional office head for the Weightmans Glasgow office said: ‘This is an exciting time for the wider firm and for its offering within the Scottish market. I am delighted to be working with the new partners, and extremely proud that we are expanding our expertise and drawing in talent from within the region.’

Weightmans has expanded rapidly in recent years. In 2011 the firm boosted its national presence by merging with Mace & Jones and acquiring the insurance arm of Vizards Wyeth.
