Burnetts has appointed Michael Walby as a partner in its corporate and commercial team.

Michael, who joins Burnetts from the Leeds office of Pinsent Masons, spent the early part of his career at Burnetts. During his time as a senior associate at Pinsent Masons, Michael worked with a variety of companies and owner managed businesses on issues including acquisitions, disposals, private equity investments, joint ventures, re-organisations, fundraisings, and general company and partnership advice.

Michael’s experience includes advising a leading supermarket group on business acquisitions, disposals and joint ventures (he also spent time on secondment in the group’s commercial legal team) and advising SIG PLC on a wide range of matters including the recent disposal of its majority interest in ICE Energy Technologies Limited.

He also advised the management of inov-8 on the private equity investment into the company and UK Sport and the directors of the Yorkshire Tour de France company on corporate governance matters.

Nick Gutteridge, managing partner at Burnetts, said: ‘Michael has established an excellent reputation as a corporate lawyer and trusted adviser to a number of well-known businesses. He will be a key member of our successful corporate and commercial department, and we are extremely proud to be able to attract a lawyer of Michael’s proven calibre back to Cumbria and back to Burnetts.’

Michael said: ‘Having thoroughly enjoyed my training, and the early part of my career with Burnetts, I am delighted to be returning as a partner. I am very much looking forward to working with the team and renewing relationships with clients and business colleagues in the region.’
