More than 4,000 solicitors have signed up to a Law Society campaign to improve the system of stamp duty land tax (SDLT) collection, the Society revealed this week.
Small law firms across the country claim that the soaring administration costs associated with the new regime are having a negative impact on their practice.
An early-day motion calling for a debate on the operation of the tax was also tabled by Mark Francois, Tory MP for Rayleigh, this week.
Former Law Society President Edward Nally said: 'We are in dialogue with HM Revenue and Customs and will do everything we can to achieve improvements in the system. We do not accept the Revenue's view that most of the problems are the fault of solicitors. The sheer volume of responses will help us with the next stage of the campaign.'
