A step towards diversity
The perception of City law firms is that they are extensions of the Oxbridge network, and offer few possibilities to anyone outside that clique
The dilemma for ethnic minority students interested in a legal career has been that while there has been no lack of desire on their part, there has been a perceived lack of opportunity. The perception of City law firms is that they are extensions of the Oxbridge network, and offer few possibilities to anyone outside that clique.Breaking down that perception is a difficult task, which is why the Diversity in Law initiative is so welcome.
The programme is designed to reach out to ethnic minorities and to dismantle barriers.
The important aspect of the programme is that it not about positive discrimination.Instead, it is about identifying those from the ethnic minorities who have the skills to succeed in the legal profession on merit and to make the first moves towards that career less intimidating. There are signs of progress.
The Law Society annual statistical report shows that 19% of newly qualified solicitors are from the ethnic minorities, compared with just more than 15% five years ago.In a fair and just society, it is essential that members from every ethnic community are fully involved in all levels and areas of the legal profession.
Diversity in Law is a small step which will lead to greater strides.
